Strawman Argument

A strawman argument misrepresents another person's position so it becomes easier to attack. The distorted version may sound similar to the original claim while removing its nuance or strongest reasoning. Recognizing the substitution keeps the discussion focused on what was actually said.

Replacing the real argument with a weaker version that is easier to attack.

What It Means

A strawman replaces someone's actual position with a distorted, exaggerated, or simplified version.

Defeating that substitute does not answer the original argument, even when the rebuttal sounds convincing.

Common Signals

A qualified claim is restated as an extreme or absolute position.
The response begins with “So you are saying…” and attacks a claim that was never made.
The strongest reasoning is omitted while a weaker substitute receives all the criticism.
Corrections are ignored and the distorted version keeps returning.

How to Respond

Restate the original position neutrally and ask whether both sides agree on it.
Quote the exact claim and identify what was added, removed, or exaggerated.
Address the strongest fair version of the argument before criticizing it.
